Contests

You almost have to get 'em all right. Despite the big upset of the Cowboys, four players went 13-0 last week to split the prize in the Coast's Pick the Pros contest. One player won the $10,000 first prize (based on the tie-breaker), while the other three got an interesting $6,666.67 apiece. With no winners in the Lucky's contest for the eighth week in a row, the carryover makes the prize $35,585 for getting a perfect card this week. The contest's pick-all format makes these carryovers unimportant, as the prize is far too low to justify the $5 fee to play. The Station contest results were not available.

Cal Neva on the Recommended List

We're adding Cal Neva to our list of recommended sports books-the first addition to that list we've made in more than a year. We've liked the way Cal Neva operates for some time, but a recent event sealed our support. While there's no official verification of this, word on the street is that they took a big hit from bettors a couple weeks back. It was the sort of situation where lesser books can make collecting difficult, but Cal Neva didn't flinch and paid off with a smile. The industry needs more of that.

Cantor at HR

Cantor Gaming has taken over the book at the Hard Rock, so in-running wagering is now available there. Cantor will also run the book at the Tropicana.

Lucky's at Fitz

Lucky's plans to open a second downtown sports book at Fitzgeralds, which will bring the company's total number of books in Nevada to 14. The new book is slated to open in January, pending regulatory approval.

Following Fezzik

Another big week at the M puts Fezz in a tie for first (a 13-2 run). While nowhere near as prestigious as the SuperContest, the prize for winning the M is more than twice that of the Hilton. He's also in contention at South Point (four games out of first), though it's “wait till next year” at the Hilton. Fezzik's records in the major contests appear below (with last week's results in parentheses).

Best MNF Parties

This week we finally got down to the Monday Night Football party at Green Valley Ranch. The Ovation theater is a great venue, but like most of the parties around town, this one is down from year's past. Beers are $2 and dogs are $3, but you can walk over to the sports book and get them for a buck apiece. Nothing to recommend here. We also checked out the Stoney's North Forty party way up on the northwest side of town. Last year this bar was located in Santa Fe and the party was our choice for best in town. The bar has since moved out of Santa Fe and they forgot to take the good party with them. There's $5 all-you-can-drink draft beer and 5¢ beers at halftime, but it's not worth the drive to the outer reaches.

To date, here's the good and bad of the MNF-party scene.

Good: Sam's Town (free dog or hot dog & beer; Suncoast (free dog & beer); South Point ($1 dogs, all-u-can-drink $15, cash drawings); Palazzo - Lagasse's Stadium (the Gucci standard for MNF parties); M Resort ($2 beers); Aria - Union lounge (half-price drinks and appetizers); any Station or Fiesta sports book ($1 drafts and dogs); Playboy Club.

Bad: Silverton, Sunset Station (Club Madrid), Cannery, Rampart, Sahara (NASCAR Café), PBR, Rockhouse, McFadden's, and Palms.

MNF at the Strip Clubs

Following are the grades we assign to the Monday Night Football parties at the strip clubs. Treasures is the best party for food; Rick's is best for drinks. Read individual reviews in earlier Updates.
